why should you self-host...

hello, if you came across this post, you're probably coming across this post because you want know why you should self-host.

self-hosting is one of the gateway into digital privacy, self-hosting is digital sovereignty.

My journey into self-hosting was mainly down to cost (IE: time data privacy) and its tradeoff. We all know about these cloud providers and how they are getting increasingly worse at protecting user data aka the....

the lastpass hack should be a small glimpse into the world where you can't trust these proprietary companies that truly put profits before it's customers, just searching the surface level of google would make anyone wanna throw all their connected internet devices into the void.

What's the solution?

self-hosting of course! now you don't need a powerful server or even a server at all.

self hosting could be anything that host data that you want access too.

You need to first think about what services you use and what your

threat model

what data are you willing to migrate, maintain and secure. It's important to know when you self-host, That anything you host yourself is now your responsibility, for all the aforementioned above and is based on your threat model. I pretty much self host everything besides email, due to its complexity.

big disclaimer!

self hosting is a huge responsibility and backups are a must! RAID IS NOT A BACKUP and at bare minimum you should do a 3-2-1 backup scheme. I would suggest you look at a offsite backup solution for critical information like backblaze or s3 compatible option

Backup Strategies: Why the 3-2-1 Backup Strategy is the Best
A Backblaze survey revealed 54% of people said they know someone or have themselves recently lost data. Find out what you can do to prevent data loss.

most important, a untested backup is not a backup. I myself go further then a 3-2-1 backup solution. I will in the future document my personal backup solution that i use in all of my devices.

Remember it's not a sprint, it's a marathon and it's gonna be a long one. i urge people to take ownership of there data, so they can secure it. our data is now the digital gold that is being mined.
